Cholesky — where it appears

The lower triangular matrix whose product with its own transpose is a given positive definite matrix. It is what turns a covariance into a transform: dividing a sample through the factor leaves errors that are uncorrelated, and the sum of the logs of its diagonal is half the log determinant of the covariance.
